Fox News

Let’s face it; John Edwards is a pretty insignificant character nowadays.  Failed VP candidate, failed Presidential candidate, etc.  Nonetheless, for him to have actually had the balls to run for President while he had this ticking time bomb sitting under him is incredible and says more about his arrogance than anything else I can imagine:

Former presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted to an affair Friday with his former videographer, Rielle Hunter, though he firmly denied tabloid reports that he is the father of her child.

Edwards released a statement late in the day saying he made a “serious error in judgment,” after telling ABC News’ Nightline in an interview scheduled to be broadcast Friday night that he repeatedly lied about the affair during his failed presidential campaign.

“I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs,” Edwards said in his statement. “I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public.

“In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself,” he said.

Became increasingly “egocentric and narcissistic”?  Worse than Obama or Bill Clinton?  What’s the yardstick here?  How does Edwards even tell that he’s turned even more increasingly into a jerk?  Anyone who has any doubts about the level of scumbagitude that Edwards possesses need only read this part:

John Edwards denied to ABC News paying any money to Hunter to keep her quiet on the affair, but said his supporters could have done such a thing without him knowing.

Smooth, stunning, and totally hilarious at the same time.

The admission Friday all but ends the speculation about his immediate role in the campaign of Barack Obama. Edwards, who dropped out of the presidential race in January, had been previously talked about as a potential vice presidential pick, or a cabinet member. But even his possible role as a speaker at the Democratic National Convention later this month was in doubt as the rumors of the affair continued to fester without a direct rebuttal.

Welcome to the bottom of Barack’s bus.  Say “hi” to Jeremiah while you’re down there.

What gets me about this whole story is that all politicians are so sure of themselves that they think they can honestly get away with anything.  They can cheat on their wives and they’re too smart to get caught; they can draft anti-gay legislation while arranging homosexual rendezvous in public restrooms; they can take bribes from businesses and special interests and nobody will notice; and they can flat out lie to us about their record because we’re too dumb to do any fact checking.  In all of these cases, it’s not so much the acts themselves that make me shake my head.  It’s the conceit of the candidates who believe they can pull anything over on us and we’ll just keep voting for them over and over again.  Even more annoying is that by and large, they do get away with it.  These are really the best we have to choose from in this country?

At least Edwards’ political career is finally destroyed.  One less arrogant, slimy asshole to worry about.

And finally there’s the notion that Silky Phony somehow fessed up now to “protect Hunter from harassment.” By making statements making her out to be a nymphomaniac slut sleeping with and getting impregnated by everything with a pulse. Please, Silky, whatever you do, don’t ever jump into the breach on behalf of our family. No, really. We wouldn’t survive the embarrassment resulting from your valiant and chivalrous defense.

Stop the ACLU:

I will say, though, that I don’t quite understand why so many politicians’ wives do this. Once, just once, I’d like to see a woman who has been completely betrayed by an egocentric, narcissistic [edited] stand up and say so. I’m all for standing by your man, but some things are unforgivable. Cheating on your wife when she’s battling terminal cancer would be considered unforgivable in my book. But hey, it’s her decision. Either she really loves him, or she really loves the money/power (a la Hillary).

Hot Air:

It’s a fair question.  If a politician proves unfaithful in his most personal relationship, what’s to say he/she won’t sell out constituents for power, money, fame, or more adultery?

Patterico’s Pontifications:

Once again, if you believe that, here is what you must also believe -

1. That he had a legitimate reason for visiting Hunter at 2:30 in the morning last month at a Beverly Hills hotel without telling his wife - even though he claims he previously told his wife about his affair with Hunter in 2006.

2.  Shortly after Hunter’s affair with Edwards supposedly ended, she began ANOTHER affair with married Edwards aide Andrew Young who managed to get her pregnant. That would mean that Hunter certainly gets around in the Edwards camp.

WizBang:

The situation for Mister Edwards would be relevant were he still running for President, or were he a serious possibility for the running mate to Senator Obama. Neither is the case, however. In fact, John Edwards’ sole capacity for which he is suited just now, is as a laughingstock, a fool who has wasted his future chances because he could not manage to remember his wife even when she needed him the most, a moron who thought that he could have an ongoing affair and lie about it with no fear of discovery or consequence, in the age of the blogs and 24-hour news services. Edwards is useless to his party, an embarrassment to be hidden away.

The Anchoress:

John Edwards’ betrayal of his wife is a private affair - to a point - once it’s out there, though, it’s “out there.” In refusing to report a story once it was “out there” the press committed a kind of betrayal, too - one that breaks the public trust just as surely as Edwards broke a private one. That, to me (and many others) was always the bigger story.
